Your first choice has a more modern look. Of the two, I definitely prefer this one though your second design utilizes space nicely and has a nice texture. I'm not sure what you intend to do with the negative space in the upper right corner of design one.

Initially, I preferred the layout with the dark background. The more I thought about the name, though, with a name like 'switch on,' the layout with the white background works better. I also prefer the alignment of icons and text and images on design1 (the one with the light background).

Both of these work well for me. When I first looked at the palm tree layout I wanted the squares to be the same size, but it creates visual interest. Both are great but lack the required paragraph about yourself.
